Duffy Books Programme

Lakeview have been part of this programme for two years. Students receive free books to take home. This is a wonderful programme which encourages reading at school and home. This year Jacqui Gray won the National Duffy Book prize for a creative poem. We were very proud of her when she won the trip to Auckland.

Kids Can Trust/Fruit in Schools programme

We are very fortunate to be partners with the two above organisations. KidsCan Trust provide raincoats and shoes and food to run our breakfast club. The Fruit in Schools Programme provides a piece of fruit to every child on a daily basis.

LEAP Programme

We employ one part time teacher to run our Lakeview Extanding Abilities Programme for gifted and talented children. We are committed to growing “tall poppies” so from Year 3 onwards children have the chance to be involved in programmes that extend and enrich their abilities.

These classes cover a range of curriculum areas eg: Research skills, English, Maths, Science, Art and also to encourage involvement in external exams (eg: Australian Competitions) and dual enrolment with the Correspondence School.

School of Music

Over the last two years we have been developing our school of music.  We are very proud of this programme and have noticed with amazement the development of our students as we have focused on their untapped musical giftedness.

Pip Hansen is appointed as our Music Specialist.  She is a graduate from the Nelson School of Music.  Pip plays a number of instruments and is an accomplished singer.  She is the lead singer and founder of a very popular local rock band called “Deaf Lemon”.

This means that throughout the day we provide tuition to individual students and groups of student’s in guitar, keyboard, drums and vocal lessons.  She has also created a number of ensemble groups: Singing Bees; a school choir; and a rock band.  The rock band “24/7” have competed in the Wellington competition, taking out 1st place. Winning, has meant we have the privilege of hosting the event next year. 24/7 will also compete in the Manawatu battle of the bands competition mid November.

Our talented Singing Bees have been asked to perform at several events during the year: the Inspired Conference; the Principal/Leaders Conference; and the Pukaha Celebrations. Our children have wowed and amazed audiences. It is wonderful to see the talent being developed.

Lakeview held our annual Music Festival to display our children’s talent. They played to packed audiences. Children from other schools and the community went away just buzzing!

Special Needs

We have one part time experienced teacher (Dawne Bird) who oversees our special needs programmes. Our team of Teacher aides  assist teachers with programmes for children who need extra help. Dawne also oversees our Parent Tutored Reading Programme.

Reading Recovery – We have one part time Reading Recovery teacher (Suzanne Jarvis) providing an extensive reading and writing programme for 6 year old children who need extra reading help.

Our Talk to Learn and Phonological Awareness Programmes help some of our 5 year olds “catch up” in oral language and awareness of letter sounds.

Granny's Basket is a new initiative to help children improve reading skills who miss out on the reading recovery programme.
